Description

PHYSALIS (ALKEKENGI) FEATURES
The Physalis or alkekengi is the fruit of a shrub belonging to the Solanaceae family, there are several varieties but the best known is the Physalis Peruviana. Round in shape, it has an orange-colored peel that can be eaten entirely. The taste is reminiscent of a sweet tomato. Physalis is wrapped in a very thin veined goblet that resembles a lantern when mature it folds inwards and forms a nice “tuft”.

PHYSALIS (ALKEKENGI) ORIGIN
The origin of physalis is still very uncertain today, some would derive from South America, others from China or Japan. The shrub grows spontaneously in damp places both in the plains and in the hills.
